VoIP Basics

VoIP, well defination is pretty simple. The voice is normally traveling in traditionally two pair copper cables. However with Voice over IP it has the ability to travel over IP or internet.

Technically saying, VoIP can be of two types:

1) IP Telephony: This includes the origination of voice over IP itself and there is no conversion from traditional two pair cable to IP.
2) Traditional voice over IP: This covers generation of voice on analog two pair cable and then converting that to IP.

Why VoIP:

The VoIP is basically has some very good and some very bad facts:

Lets list out good facts first:

1) VoIP is very portable and same number can be used over internet from any location.
2) It gives you single infrastructure for both of your internet(Data) needs and voice needs. You save on AMC, hardware cost and upgradation cost for two different infrastructures.
3) You can almost use multiple service provider with one endpoint (Phone instrument). i.e you can specify if you want to route calls to France through service provider 1 and calls to U.K through service provider 2.
4) You can also opt for software based phone if you don't want to have hardware installed at your home and office. X-lite is one of the free software that can be used with many of the service provider. Also, SJ Phone is also good freeware software that can be used to make and recieve calls directly on your computer.
5) You can alway carry multiple countries DID number ( Inbound calling numbers) like for U.S ( 1-212-513-xxxx), UK etc while even you are sitting at any part of the world to recieve calls. This will give you a virtual world and seemless operation globally.

There are few bad facts:

1) If your internet or connectivity is down you might not be able to make emergency calls.
2) The bandwidth consumption need to be taken care based on number of concurrent callls that are expected.
3) If there is any problem in bandwidth connection or internet connection you might face voice quality issues.
4) The security is still a concern , and hacking can be easily used for capturing voice.
5)  The basic IT knowledge should be there to understand the IP infrastructure and troubleshooting.
